ABOUT THIS EVENT
Charity trustees usually have a dual role when it comes to fundraising: providing oversight, but also frequently offering advice, support and additional capacity. For many charities, the networks and experience that trustees can bring are a key part of what they look for in the role. Meanwhile, for many trustees acting as an ambassador for the charity with supporters and potential donors is an important part of what they contribute.
The pressure on both aspects of trustees’ role in fundraising has increased. Charities face rising need at the same time as income is being squeezed, putting greater pressure on fundraising. At the same time, greater expectations of trustee oversight following the death of Olive Cooke, new Charity Commission guidance and the creation of a new regulator have left many trustees confused and cautious about what they should be doing. And among all of this, recent events have highlighted the challenges that can occur when a charity’s fundraising practice is not aligned with its mission.
This seminar will explore best practice in fundraising from a trustee perspective. We will consider not only the legal requirements, but the practical lessons that can help trustees make the best contribution to their charity and ensure that fundraising strategy helps the charity to achieve maximum impact.
It will answer questions such as:
- What role can trustees usefully play in fundraising?
- How can trustees ensure that fundraising practice is aligned with and contributes to the charity’s mission?
- What questions should trustees be asking of their charity’s fundraising?
- How can trustees balance their oversight role with other demand in this area?
- How can charities ensure they reap the benefits of increased trustee involvement in fundraising?
