Grandparents Plus has joined forces with Mentor UK, 4Children and the Childhood Bereavement Network to develop an exciting  new training package for professionals who are supporting kinship carers – grandparents and members of the wider family who are raising a relative’s child.

Across the UK, an estimated 200,000-300,000 children are living with kinship carers, often because of very difficult family circumstances including drug or alcohol misuse, bereavement, imprisonment, parental illness or disability.

This one day training course looks at how to identify and support kinship carers.  It is important that kinship carers get the right advice at an early stage as over half of the children being raised in kinship care have disabilities or support needs but only 5% are legally entitled to support.

Thanks to funding from the Department for Education we have developed an Early Help Model. The training is designed for professionals who may support kinship carers through their work. This could be; childrens’ service centre staff, nursery staff, early years provisions staff, primary and secondary school pupil support staff, FE college and 6th form student support staff and  other service providers to families.

During this free training course, you will learn about:

Morning session

- What is kinship care
- The challenges of kinship care
- How you can help kinship carers

Afternoon session
- The support and information kinship carers  need if they are caring for a child because of parental drug or alcohol misuse.

 Lunch will be provided.
