Using data

This page is free to all
These sources of data can be used to influence commissioning and improve contract bids.

About the voluntary sector

The NCVO UK Civil Society Almanac contains a wealth of data about the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector. You can use this data to discuss with commissioners, for example, that:

  • funding cuts have had a disproportionately greater impact on charities, at a time when charitable action is most needed
  • often there are fewer charities in areas of higher need, when it should be the other way around.

Local area data

A Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) is an ongoing process by which local authorities, clinical commissioning groups and other public sector partners jointly describe the current and future health and wellbeing needs of its local population and identify priorities for action. The JSNA is not just about health and personal social care services; it is also about the wider aspects of health including poverty, employment, education, public safety, housing and the environment.

Office for National Statistics has a database that can be interrogated at ‘borough’, ‘ward’ or ‘super-output’ level, and you can search on many categories such as crime and safety, economic deprivation, housing and work deprivation.
