The governing body must ensure it has a sufficient number of trustees and plan for succession.

A key responsibility of the board is to ensure its own effectiveness and renewal. Make it a regular annual task to ask:

  • Have we got enough trustees, with the right knowledge, experience and skills?
  • Do our trustees need training or support to do their jobs effectively?
  • Do we need new trustees and where will we find them?

Before you advertise or search, there are a range of trustee recruitment and training resources to help with you with the recruitment process:

Advertising for trustees

  • NCVO members can advertise for free using our Trustee Bank on our website. This will also be reviewed for suitability in our Step on Board trustee recruitment programme. Information on joining NCVO including other benefits available is on our website.
  • NCVO's Trusted Supplier CharityJob posts charity trustee and other volunteer roles for free. You will need to create a recruiter account.
  • The  website advertises volunteer vacancies including trusteeships for free
  • Some local Volunteer Centres provide trustee or volunteer matching services
  • Our Trusted Supplier Trustees Unlimited provides 10% discount for NCVO members on their recruitment services
  • Reach Volunteering is a registered charity and the single biggest source of trustees in the UK.
