How to find a charity job

There are plenty of reasons why people work in the charity sector: it’s rewarding, there’s a wide variety of roles and causes and your colleagues are likely to be smart, creative and great to work with. If you’re thinking about working for a charity then here’s some advice on what to think about and where to look.

Think about how you can work for a charity

You could be employed directly by a charity, you could be a consultant who offers services to charities – for example, running training. Or you could offer services through an agency – as a lawyer or in advertising, for example. As mentioned above, you could work in another sector but volunteer your spare time to a charity. It might also be possible to take a role in another sector and then go on secondment to a charity. For example, a lawyer may have a year’s secondment to a charity law centre.

What about your skills, experience and values?

When looking for a job in the charity sector you’ll need to pinpoint what your key skills are and think about the best fit with a role. You’ll need to consider how to highlight your skills or where you might need to build more or make new contacts. You should also think about education and training that you already have or are working towards.

Any paid work experience can be applied, even if it didn’t have anything to do with the voluntary sector. Focus on your transferable skills here: administration, people management, finance, communication for example, or those specific to a particular role: IT, counselling or event management.

In the voluntary sector it’s often not just your professional experience that’s valued. Organisations will be looking for people who embody their values and who can understand and empathise with their service users – something that often comes from personal life experience. So don’t be afraid to share this as well, whether it’s relevant to an organisation or role.
